Overview
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the principal body for coordination, policy review, and recommendations on economic, social, and environmental issues within the UN system. ECOSOC's key functions include promoting higher standards of living and full employment, identifying solutions to international economic, social, and health problems, facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation, and coordinating the work of various UN specialized agencies. With 54 members elected by the General Assembly, ECOSOC serves as a central forum for discussing international economic and social issues. It plays a vital role in advancing sustainable development, overseeing subsidiary bodies in areas such as statistics, population, and development policy.
